Right now with the calendar picker if you click year it only goes back 10 years. This makes the process of selecting a date of birth process slow.

However, one could argue that the traditional non-calendar approach should therefore be used for dates of birth.

Hi John, I don't like the date picker for the reason that it makes entering dates of birth difficult. The traditional non calendar way for dates of birth would be ok, but even better would be a date field, like the search field in the portal where you can enter 04101978 and it converts to 04/10/1978. This would particularly help people using mobile devices instead of key boards.
